CHEYENNE – No. 4-ranked Cheyenne East’s defense limited one of the state’s most potent offenses to secure a 16-14 victory Friday at third-ranked Sheridan.
The Broncs (3-2) entered the game ranked second in Class 4A in scoring offense at 41 points per game.
The teams exchanged turnovers on downs to start the game.
East (4-1) took a 2-0 lead on Sheridan’s second drive with 4 minutes, 26 remaining in the first quarter when Sheridan quarterback Zack Koltiska bobbled a bad snap and was sacked in the end zone for a safety.
“It was an awesome performance by our defense,” T-Birds coach Chad Goff said. “As the game went on, the kids got better and better. We didn’t wrap up well on Sheridan’s first drive, but we rallied and started gang tackling from there on out.”
East went up 9-0 when senior quarterback Graedyn Buell connected with junior wide receiver Gavin Goff for a 48-yard touchdown.
Sheridan got on the scoreboard when Colson Coon rushed in from 46 yards out to cut East’s lead to 9-7. East stretched the lead to 16-7 on the next drive when Buell ran in from five yards out.
The T-Birds’ offense was stuck in neutral the rest of the way.
“Early in the third quarter, we had a good drive and then we got complacent and didn’t punch it in,” Chad Goff said. “That gave Sheridan the confidence to keep playing and battling.”
The win is East’s first at Sheridan since the 2013 Class 4A semifinals.
